O: Sutures holding well on the RD2 and L ventral wing, sites look to be healing well. Bird self taloned RD2 while in hand, site started bleeding slightly, held pressure and applied tissue glue and bleeding stopped. Small scab present over ventral R wing, scab on cere. Flight tested, bird flies well. Cleaned RD2 wound on dorsal aspect of digit - skin flap with exposed tendon underneath. Closed with 5-0 webcryl in a simple interrupted pattern. Small wound on the ventral aspect of the R wing, no edema noted today, no laxity. Drew blood from the L medial metatarsal vein. O: Performed intake exam with fundic, rads. Cleaned wounds to feet, distal L wing, cere. Applied TAO to deepest laceration on RD2, DermaGel to cere wound. Gave oral meds. Placed in ICU on medium heating pad. ------------- PHYSICAL EXAM FINDINGS ---------------- Mentation: BAR Temp (F): 101.0 Dehydration (%): 3 Heart rate: 210 Resp rate: 20 Neurologic: WNL Head/mouth/beak: Deep wound on cere. Small superficial abrasions at base of gnathotheca. Ears: Small scab AS pinna Eyes: NSF. Wings: Some dried blood at distal L wing, base of LP10. Possible laxity and edema. Legs: NSF. Feet: Lacerations over both feet. Deepest laceration to cranial RD2, plantar RD2, and medial RD3. Medial RD3 bleeding heavily, may have taloned self. Cleaned, applied pressure, still bleeding freely. Applied curaspon and held on with vet wrap for rest of exam. Body: NSF. Feather condition: Good. Ectoparasites: Flat flies Other: N/A. Radiographic findings: NSF, but poor rads. Initial treatment: Cleaned wounds. Stopped bleeding on RD3. Gave 20cc LRS SQ in R inguinal, 0.27cc meloxicam, 0.24cc pentoxifylline, 0.67cc TMS PO.
A: Barred owl removed from chicken coop net entanglement. All wounds appear superficial at this time. Unclear if cere and most of feet wounds are from netting or from crate/self-injury. Bird has a fair prognosis for release at this time pending development of further issues - was not entangled for long before removal. Bird fractious for exam, unable to get very diagnostic imaging.
P: Continue temp checks. rx meloxicam, pentoxifylline, TMS, fluids. Monitor wounds to digits on both feet, esp RD2+RD3, clean and apply TAO PRN. Monitor wound distal R wing, watch for development of edema, laxity. Monitor cere wound, clean with dilute betadine and apply DermaGel PRN. 12/1: fecal, blood, vet check, repeat rads. 12/2: IOP study. SF in PM, HF in AM if DNE beginning 12/3.
